Adult Speech & Hearing Difficulties
Adult Speech & Hearing Difficulties (Deafness) Print E-mail

Many adults suffer from some form of speech or hearing difficulty, or deafness. For many people, speech and/or being deaf can make life difficult and effect confidence, social interaction, and wellbeing. However, there are many things that can be done to improve communication and either improve or facilitate hearing and speech difficulties.

icommunicate will be providing information and strategies to promote communication for adults with speech and hearing difficulties. This section has been broken into 5 parts:

Adult Speech Difficulties

This section gives an overview of adult speech difficulties and as the site grows we will offer information and strategies to facilitate communication.

Voice Problems

This section will focus on the voice, how it works, and what can go wrong.  There are many practical strategies we can use to have a healthy voice.  Go to the Speech and Language Folder of our Downloads Centre to see a comprehensive article relating to voice problems and the strategies and ideas you can use to improve your voice.

Adult Dysfluency (stammering or stuttering)

This section does not provide therapy for dysfluency, but provides information about the different options for treatment.

Public Speaking

This section will offer some tips and guidelines on improving public speaking, and providing a clearer more commanding performance.

Adult Hearing Impairment

Many adults suffer from hearing impairment to a certain degree. Many younger adults who have yet to experience hearing impairment do not perceive it as a major difficulty, but those who have lost their hearing will tell you a different story.  icommunicate will focus on technology to help hearing and practical strategies to help speech and communication throughout the day.

Although this section will give you lots of valuable tools to facilitate communication, if you have the opportunity to see an experienced speech and language pathologist / therapist, then this will provide you with extra therapy to run in parallel with this information and these strategies.
