Fatigue and Tiredness after a Traumatic Brain Injury Print E-mail

Managing Fatigue

Fatigue and tiredness are very common symptoms after a traumatic brain injury. If you do not manage your fatigue following a traumatic brain injury, you may have very little success with accomplishing any of your other goals and your ecovery will be slower. If you can manage fatigue, then you have building block in place to address other issues and facilitate rehabilitation and treatment. Sleep difficulties are often a result of brain injury and it may mean you need to sleep a lot or you cannot get to sleep when you go to bed. There are a number of strategies to help with fatigue:

  • Have a set routine for sleeping at a certain time ever night
  • Avoid food or drinks such as coffee that are detrimental to sleep, late at night
  • Schedule brain breaks during the day.  This might include an afternoon nap
  • Avoid difficult tasks when you feel tired

These are just a few strategies to facilitate fatigue management.  An occupational therapist will help you find strategies for fatigue that suit your lifestyle.
