Speech difficulties as a result of an operation 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Hello,
My younger brother Imran Rushaid had an operation on the back of his head (just above his neck) when he was about 5 years old to remove a small gristle. He is now 13. Following this, his speech deteriorated dramatically and now he doesn’t speak at all. Imran and his other two siblings Soraya and Rehanna have spastic paraplegia but the two girls can speak. We are sure that Imrans speech problems are a result of his operation as it happend straight after. what do you think?

Thank you very much
Maria Rushaid

Hi Maria,

Without knowing the the full nature of the procedure, or Imrans speech abilities prior to his operation, it is difficult to say whether his speech problems are the result of the op.

If Imran is 13 and still having difficulty with speech you should be looking at alternative forms of communication. Start with some lo-tech options such as picture communication books, or, if Imran has good literacy skills, use an alphabet chart. It would be a good idea to get in touch with your local speech and language therapist and get some advice. Imran maybe able to get funding for a hi-tech communication device with speech output.

Hi,

Thank you for the advice, I will get in touch with his speech therapist and ask about alternatives.

Before the op his speech was perfect and he could speak both Arabic and English. My mum and the rest of the family feel it can’t be just a coincidence that his speech deteriorated within weeks of having the op but yet have no connection. What do you think?

What do think we should do to go into this further? Should we go our GP or to the specialist?

Regards,
Maria

Hi Maria,

It is difficult to know whether the op caused your brother's speech problems without knowing all the facts. If you feel there has been malpractice then I assume you should visit the relevant medical professionals to confirm this. Your GP may be able to guide you with this. While you are going through this process, get in contact with a Speech Therapist to see what you can do to help Imran.
