Immediate Stroke Response - What do I do? 3 Years, 9 Months ago
I read somewhere that there are steps you can take to help recognise if someone is having a stroke, and immediate action that you can take that can help minimise potential damage if they are having a stroke. What would you suggest is helpful in a situation of a loved one having a stroke?

Hi Bianco,

Good question. If you suspect a stroke get medical help immediately. Time is a crucial factor and early medical help can possibly reduce the severity of long term damage - EVERY MINUTE COUNTS!!. Strokes caused by a blood clot can be helped by drugs that will thin the clot. If you exhibit any of the following signs, it may not be a stroke, but get medical as soon as possible:

- Numbness in an arm, leg, face or one side of the body

- Sudden difficulties with speech or understanding

- loss of balance or coordination

- sudden severe head pain and blackouts or blurred vision

Get to a hospital or doctor as soon as you can if you suspect you are having a stroke - DON'T WAIT.

Be aware of what cause strokes, which is usually poor diet, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes and smoking. If you fit into any of these categories try to change your lifestyle accordingly or talk to your doctor about stroke prevention.
